A state senator says Utah’s water districts have discouraged conservation by using property taxes to keep water rates artificially low and now he wants to put a stop to the subsidies.
“We don’t have a pricing mechanism for water and our utilization does not reflect the cost of the product,” said Sen. John Valentine, R-Orem. “It’s actually hidden in the property taxes that we all pay.”

If you are one of those, look for a tutor who is willing to give you several shorter tutoring sessions frequently over a week instead of just one long session. Your success is not measured in how many hours you study but in what you learn and retain.

Chat programs and faster internet in the past decade have made the interaction between student and tutor on-line easy and effective. Both parties save time in travelling and often can find meeting times online that would be difficult to arrange in real life.

Washington • Sen. Orrin Hatch’s staff said he “misspoke” when he recently alleged that abortions account for 95 percent of what Planned Parenthood does, a comment similar to one that caused a Senate colleague considerable grief last year.

Suspect sought after alleged failed child abduction

Unified Police on Wednesday night were warning Herriman residents to be on alert after a man allegedly tried to abduct a teenage girl walking home from school.
Police said the 13-year-old was walking northbound about 3 p.m. near 5600 West and 13700 South when she encountered a man walking on a trail in the area. Police said the man approached the girl, grabbed her by the arm, pulled her and told her she had to go with him.

The Legislature’s education budget committee recommended Wednesday night that schools get an additional $146 million next school year to pay for new students, boost per pupil spending and fund new types of tests and more computers, among other items.

There is a silent dental crisis going on and data revealed by a prominent senator expose the depth of this crisis. Over 130 million people don’t have dental insurance and nearly 17 million low-income children can’t and don’t visit a dentist every year; never get their annual checkup. Over 45% of all kids over the age of two saw a dentist; over 25% of all people over the age of 65 have lost all their teeth. These facts are worrying, because dental hygiene and good dental care and health can eliminate much of the risky medical outcomes that poor dental health cause.
Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC)can be the solution. FQHC are community-based centers in underserved counties across the nation that afford sliding-fee based medical and dental care.
These health centers are part of health reform passed in 2010. With so many people affected with dental problems, these centers take on new significance when compared to the overall down line costs these folks could incur. Affordable dental care is a major concern and the stats back this up as fact.
For people caught in the unemployment cycle of the last few years and have been unable to afford dental care, this picture is real. They’re caught between a rock and a hard place. They need a job to afford dental care and can’t get a job without first getting dental care. Look at the job picture and imagine two equally qualified job applicants vying for the same job. Imagine that one candidate has a healthy smile and all their teeth. Imagine the other candidate having poor oral health and missing teeth. Odds are high that the applicant with good teeth gets the job.
Adults lacking dental care have medical risks due to dental care voids including increased risk for diabetes, heart disease, even with pregnancy. This dental crisis impacts everyone; not just the individuals or families with dental crisis. As the bread winners are unable to get jobs, their kids suffer in myriad ways, including losing school time because of tooth pain.
As more dentists shift to the cosmetic dentistry side, these segment of the population suffers. But the good news is that over 3.5 million people have received dental care through these FQHCs; hopefully, more centers will spring up in all underserved areas. Today, only 20% of practicing dentists accept people on Medicaid, so the lack of skilled practitioners adds to the problem of those in low-income situations. But watch for new emphasis on ways to correct this situation.

Many parents wonder whether tutoring would benefit their children. Naturally, they all want the best for their children, but between school, church, sports, scouts, music lessons and birthday parties, families are just about tapped out for both time and money. Education is a priority on most parents lists, but they wonder whether tutoring would be beneficial, or if their son or daughter just needs better focus in class or more help at home.
If your children are needing extra help with school, you may be able to get tutoring at no cost. School ministers have a certain amount of money in their discretionary budget that remains after paying salaries bills and the other basics that they are able to use in programs as they choose. School budgets are tight but tutoring has proven to be effective in helping students who needed the most, and the federal government provides funding through the no Child left behind program to some schools.
If you have access to an afterschool program, perhaps at the YMCA, or the Boys and Girls Club, tutoring may be included in their afternoon programming. In most cases this will not be the one-on-one kind of tutoring but more like homework help, although there may be times in the schedule for students to get individual attention if they need more assistance. This kind of help won’t particularly deepen the child’s understanding of a subject, but it will supply help with understanding subjects being taught in school and keep them from falling behind in their classes.
Private tutors can be hired to do one-on-one teaching or small group tutoring, which is often available at a somewhat lower cost for each student. A private tutor will provide instruction in the subjects. The student is currently learning or if preferred, the tutor can teach additional subjects. One particular advantage that the private tutor has is that they can spend as long as necessary to ensure that the basics are fully understood, and can go back and review as needed, rather than sticking to a particular schedule. Kids don’t like to call attention to things they don’t understand in class, and sometimes they don’t know how to say what it is that is confusing to them. Individual tutoring allows those difficult areas to be picked up and resolved.
Struggling students can benefit greatly from tutoring. But students who are doing well may, also. Tutoring can take a student up to a higher level of test scores and can take a B student and bring them up to making As. Another thing is tutor can do is to teach a subject that hasn’t been taught at all. The individualized instruction allows for much more effective transmission of information. So a lot can be taught in a short amount of time. If your child needs tutoring but the cost is keeping you from arranging it, do be sure and speak to the administration or even your child’s teacher at his school and inquire about what resources are available to you.
